You recently read an article, or rather its headline, that chocolate is not unhealthy at all. So you reach for the random plate in the store, thinking that you are doing something good for your body. Meanwhile, the matter is not as simple as it may seem. What mistakes can we make when buying our favorite chocolate delicacy?

1.We don’t pay attention to the cocoa content
To deserve the name of healthy, chocolate should contain a minimum of 60% cocoa. It is cocoa that contains substances necessary for the proper functioning of the body, such as magnesium, zinc, manganese, phosphorus, iron and many vitamins. In addition to them, cocoa is also a very good source of antioxidants that slow down the aging process and prevent the development of cancer cells. Unfortunately, antioxidants are sensitive to high temperatures, so the healthiest choice is chocolate made from unroasted cocoa beans. Products of this type have even fifteen times higher content of these health-beneficial substances than blueberries, which are considered the best source of antioxidants.

2.We turn a blind eye to the sugar content
Sugar is a major culprit in many health problems. It not only causes the accumulation of unwanted fatty tissue, but also weakens immunity, promotes the development of cancer and dangerous diseases such as diabetes or atherosclerosis. Healthy chocolate should therefore not contain white refined sugar at all. Instead, the composition may include healthy substitutes, such as stevia, xylitol or coconut sugar. Unfortunately, it is hard to find among popular brands of chocolate, those that do not contain white sugar. It is worth reaching for healthy raw chocolates, the composition of which does not follow unhealthy sweeteners.

3.We choose unhealthy accessories
Healthy chocolate doesn’t have to be boring. However, if we want some variety instead of the traditional bitter plate, we should avoid the dubious quality of the filling, consisting mainly of very harmful, hardened palm oil, the aforementioned white sugar and additives hidden under the famous symbols starting with E. Choosing chocolate with additions, it is worth betting on natural, unprocessed products such as grains, nuts and dried fruit, which will be an additional source of vitamins and micronutrients.

Raw chocolate – where to buy?

We already know that the healthiest choice among chocolates are undoubtedly products based on unroasted cocoa beans. Unfortunately, it is still in vain to find them on most store shelves. It is best to buy this type of product in ecological stores, online or directly on the manufacturer’s website.
